10 Major Devastating Earthquakes After Year 2000

More than 60 people have been reported dead in another major earthquake that hit Nepal on May 12, 2015. In the past decade, several quakes around the world have killed hundreds of thousands of people. Here’s a look at 10 deadliest earthquakes after the year 2000.

1. April 25, 2015: More than 8,000 dead in Nepal

More than 8,000 people were killed on April 25, 2015, after a magnitude 7.8 quake hit Nepal. Nepal’s Prime Minister said the death toll could reach 10,000. At least 19 of the deaths occurred after an avalanche on Mount Everest, the world’s highest mountain above sea level. Outside Nepal, at least 78 were killed in India. Deaths were also reported in Bangladesh. The United Nations says that an estimated 8 million people have been affected.

2. March 11, 2011: More than 15,000 dead or missing in Japan

As of April 10, 2015 number of confirmed deaths in Japan were 15,891 after the earthquake triggered tsunami hit Japan’s coastline. The 9.0 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Japan on March 11, 2011, resulting in a tsunami as high as 128 feet in some areas.  Total damages from the earthquake and tsunami were estimated to be $300 billion dollars according to the Japanese government. The earthquake was the largest ever to strike Japan.

3. Jan 12, 2010: More than 160,000 dead in Haiti

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake tore through the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Jan. 12, 2010, killing hundreds of thousands of people. University of Michigan study provided as estimate of 160,000 deaths whereas the government estimated 316,000 deaths. The quake left more than a million people homeless. Five years later, many people still live in tents.

4. Sept 30, 2009: More than 1,100 dead in Indonesia

On Sept. 30, 2009 a powerful temblor of magnitude 7.9 hit Indonesia that killed at least 1100 people. The quake started at sea and rippled through Sumatra, the westernmost island in the Indonesian archipelago. More than 1 million people were estimated to be affected whereas more than 250,000 houses were partially or severely damaged.

5. May 12, 2008: More than 80,000 dead or missing in China

The Great Sichuan Earthquake or Wenchuan Earthquake measured at magnitude 8 and 7.9 had struck Sichuan in May 12,2008. More than 69,000 people were reported to be dead and another 18,0000 missing after China’s worst natural disaster in a generation. About 5 million were left homeless and the quake caused more than $122 billion in direct economic losses.

6. May 26, 2006: More than 5,700 dead in Indonesia

Indonesia’s heavily populated Java Island was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 on May 26, 2006, killing more than 5,700 people. About 650,000 people were displaced by the disaster and more than 30,000 were injured. Estimated financial losses were around $3.1 Billion.

7. Oct 8, 2005: More than 87,000 people killed in Pakistan occupied Kashmir

The mountains of northern Pakistan were struck with a magnitude of 7.6 on Oct. 8, 2005, killing more than 87,000 people dead and leaving more than 75,000 injured in Pakistan administered Kashmir. The temblor flattened entire villages of mud-brick homes and triggered landslides in the Kashmir region of the nation.

8. Dec 26, 2004: More than 170,000 dead in Indonesia

Sumatra – Andaman earthquake or the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake had a magnitude of 9.1, the 3rd largest earthquake ever recorded on a seismograph. The earthquake that was caused due to Indian plates slides under the overriding Burma plate triggering the tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people in 14 countries where around 170,000 people were killed in Indonesia.

9. Dec 26, 2003: More than 26,000 dead in Iran

Kenman province in south eastern Iran was struck by an earthquake on December 26, 2003 killing more than 26,000 people and leaving 30,000 injured.  The earthquake was a result of stresses generated by Arabian plate moving northward against the Eurasian plate. City Bam which was hit by this earthquake was one of the most popular tourist attractions of Iran

10. Jan 26, 2001: More than 19,000 dead in Gujarat
